A techno-sensory environment deconstructing the classic codes of the club.
From the cabins of sensory deprivation to the experimental technical spaces of Iannis Xenakis and his Polytopes of the 1970s, through the festive utopias of Italian radical architecture, the relationship between festivity and technique operates a decisive link in fields of research at the crossroads of art, space design and industrial creation.
Experimental Party Unit seizes this multidisciplinary richness by creating a tool-like environment.
Initially presented at the Undomestic festival at Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2021, E.P.U is a techno-sensory experience designed to letting it go. Its aesthetics draw from several inspirations ranging from theme parks to prefigurations of futuristic raves. At the crossroads of engineering and design, E.P.U. is rooted in a research approach navigating between spatial and sound experience, technicality and plasticity.
EPU explores the party as a space of total experimentation not only for the public, but also for the artists. A mirror of science fiction, it is envisioned as "one of the only remaining sociotechnical and utopian laboratories in today’s world". Consisting of 4 interactive machines where sound parameters interact with the kinetics and lights programming, E.P.U aims at the development of a social prototype, a zone dedicated to letting go, a sensory enclave activated by a joyful celebration of the technique.
Each machine can be controlled live, in the same way that a musician manages his DJ set during a rave, in order to enter into a symbiosis with the audience. E.P.U is the result of in-depth work between the visual effects and the sound environment. For several months, we developed these interactions with AGC collective and Jeanne Laborde. Arranged in a 200 sq meter space, E.P.U's machines bear evocative names in the manner of popular theme park attractions. The public can move around, sit and lie down in this environment, thus deconstructing the classic codes of the club.
