Creating, prototyping and testing the best possible in-store user experience for Essilor’s new optical diagnosis machine.

Units was approached by Essilor Instruments to design the user experience for the deployment of the Vision R-800, a new machine that makes more accurate optical refraction through a unique variable focus lens.

We implemented a user centric design approach in order to understand the challenges of the various stakeholders: ophthalmologists, opticians and patients. We built a fluid experience by producing several scenarios and their key interactions. These scenarios were refined in an iterative way in order to highlight the most engaging elements when adopting a new optical measurement system.

Through workshops with the Essilor Instruments team as well as with Swiss patients and ophthalmologists, we were able to identify a number of areas for improvement, particularly in the communication of ophthalmological results and the evolution of patient pathologies over time. By designing a new tool for the restitution of results that is more empathetic and understandable for patients, our team has focused on the relevance of technological innovation for the benefit of users.

The Vision R-800 was awarded a 2018 Silmo d'or in the hardware & equipment category at the World Optical Show.
