Part sound system, part playground, part experiment. Four machines turn a party into a space artists can play and visitors can inhabit.

背景

A club usually tells you where to stand, where to look and when to dance. With the support of Audi Talents, we set out to disrupt that script.
Experimental Party Unit draws on sensory environments, from the technical spaces of Iannis Xenakis to the excess of theme parks.
These references led us to a question: what happens when the machinery of a party becomes its main attraction? We wanted to make a space where artists could experiment and visitors could decide how close to the action they wanted to be.

任务

We built four interactive machines whose lights and movements are tied to sound. Each can be controlled live, giving artists the means to change the room as they perform and respond to the people inside it.
Working with AGC collective and Jeanne Laborde, we spent months developing the relationship between sound and visual effects, from the machines’ individual behaviour to their combined impact.
We then spread them across a 200 m² space, creating different places the audience had room to choose its own way through the experience.

成果

The audience could walk, dance, sit or lie down while the artists changed the light and movement around them in real time.
Every position offered a different relationship to the sound and the machines.
Presented at Palais de Tokyo in Paris and Festival Maintenant in Rennes in 2021, Experimental Party Unit made the club feel less like a venue and more like an instrument everyone was inside. It opened up the party to people who wanted to watch, explore or surrender to it.
